Call or email me if you have any questions before or after class.

Date & Time: Thursday, November 14, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Class Description: In this class you will be making a Kawandi style placemat. This style of quiltmaking involves layering patches of fabric, working from the outside into the center.  The size of the quilt is dictated by the size of the backing and batting, as it is appliqued and quilted at the same time. We will be hand sewing. No machine required.  Pre-work required.

Supply List

  • Backing fabric (if you use a cute print you have a 2 sided placemat) 15” x 19” or 1” larger in both dimensions than your desired placemat size.

  • Lightweight batting or flannel 14”x18” or 1” smaller in both dimensions than desired placemat size.

  • Assorted scraps - no smaller than 3” x 5” (The more fabrics you use the more interesting the placemat will be. Also, it’s fun to share some of your scraps with your fellow quilters.)

  • Small iron and wool mat or wooden/plastic pressing tool or roller (These are all optional - the scraps will be folded under before adding to the quilt, you could just pin in place.

  • Small scissors

  • Straight pins

  • Perle cotton size 8 or 12 wt. The most popular Perle cotton weight is #8. This is what I generally use. The larger the number the finer the thread.

  • Embroidery needles with eyes large enough for your perle cotton. Embroidery Needle #7 Chenille/Wool Applique #22. The #22 has a bigger eye which will accommodate Perle Cotton and the Embroidery Floss very easily. The #7 embroidery needle has a smaller eye and may require a needle threader.

  • Needle threader (optional)

  • Thimble (optional)

Pre- class instructions

  • Cut your rectangle and press up a 1/2” border around the perimeter of the rectangle.

We will be taking a 30 min lunch break.  There is a fridge and microwave available if you want to bring lunch or quick and easy take-out nearby!
