Japanese Boro Stitch and Scrap Scarf - $50 class fee - Friday, June 20, 2025 - 10:00 to 3:30 pm



Discover the rich and intricate world of Boro Stitching, a traditional Japanese textile
technique renowned for its beauty, history and sustainability. In this 5-hour course you will
embark on a creative journey exploring the art of Boro stitching and its profound cultural
significance and walk away with a beautiful handmade scarf.
Boro , which translates to “rags” or “tatters: originated in Japan during the Edo Period (1609-
1868) as a means of mending and repurposing textiles in rural farming communities. Its
simple stitches bring function and beauty to the garment. Each textile tells a story — whether
it is the scraps of fabrics that are used for the patches, or the stitches chosen for the repair.
Mending brings fashion and interest to the item. Come and join us and enjoy the art of Boro
stitching.

Class Description: In this class you will learn how to apply the art of Japanese Boro Stitching to a wearable piece of

art. The scarf looks beautiful and will accessorize many of your outfits.

General Sewing Supplies:

? Small iron and a wool mat to press your scraps
? Perle cotton thread in choice of color in size 8. Crochet thread in size 10, mercerized
cotton works well too.
? Scissors
? Pins or clips
? Old lace findings, ribbon, yo-yo’s, yarn, buttons.

Fabric and items needed:

? Soft linen or muslin measuring 10 inches by WOF (42”). Kits are available at the shop.
? Scraps of your choice or what you have at hand. These scraps can be coordinating or
simple random scraps you have at hand.
? Perle Cotton Thread size 8 in beige, black or variegated, your choice. Sashiko thread is
available at the shop.
? Large eye needle size, 2 to 2.5” long
? Thimble
?

*A limited number of kits will be available at Coco's Prescott Quilt works. These will include linen fabric for the scarf,
lace findings, and other cute accessories to embellish to your project. These are available for purchase at Coco's Prescott Quilt Works
a week before the class. Fabric scraps are not included. $25/kit
